A Wicked Evening

Last night, we were invited by a couple at church to join them for dinner and attend the Dallas Summer Musical performance of Wicked.

Here’s the synopsis from the Dallas Summer Musical Web site:
Long before Dorothy dropped in, two other girls meet in the Land of Oz. One - born with emerald green skin - is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two unlikely friends end up as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch makes for the most spellbinding new musical in years.

WICKED, the untold story of the witches of Oz, features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, Academy Award winner for Pocahontas and The Prince of Egypt) and book by Winnie Holzman ("My So Called Life," "Once And Again" and "thirtysomething"), and is based on the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire. With musical staging by Tony Award winner Wayne Cilento (Aida, The Who's Tommy, How To Succeed...), WICKED is directed by 2003 and 2004 Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Assassins, Take Me Out, Frankie & Johnny in the Clair de Lune).

We had been dying to see this show ever since one of my friends returned from New York and sung its praises. And this praise was not undeserved. The wonderful performances and witty script combined for an enjoyable evening (and one I will not ruin with spoilers. Do see it if you get a chance).

FYI, the show will be playing through October 23, and tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster.

Hey, I've herd how good the show is, i've got the CD with all the music from the show. I did pick up the book, and its much darker then the show, not bad, just... not what I thought it would be. Defying Gravity, yea soo good. It is really just great, Idina Menzel is the exact person to play that part. However after she re-did Rent on the big screen I think she's a little to busy with Wicked to do Rent justice anymore. Just my two cents! ~MJ
