Another One Bites the Dust

We knew the house across the street's days were numbered.

Last fall, when we received a visit from our Heating & Air technician, he told me about his last visit to 3048 Fondren, how the furnace was corroded and the floors had buckled. SMU had just purchased the property from the tenant whom I'm told had lived there for 40 years, and it looked like the house could not be salvaged.

Today, the house went from monument of disrepair to pile of rubble. All in about 30 minutes.

I was sitting my upstairs office finishing up a journal article, when the rhythmic mechanical sounds I was hearing in the background suddenly gave way to a horrible crunch.

I ran downstairs and saw the front of the house implode under the weight of a bulldozer.

What did I do? Grabbed my camera, of course, and shot about 250 photos of the demolition.

What a sight: a house probably about half a century old disappearing before my eyes.

Of course, we are very familiar with older houses being demolished. My wife and I lived in a house that was torn down to make room for a certain presidential library (or more likely, a parking lot for said structure) coming soon to a campus near me.

Still, seeing it happen like is interesting.

If you get a chance, check out the pics. There's a few dramatic ones in there.
